Physicists generally avoid philosophy. There is a sort of feeling that If a theory has some philosophical value then it cannot be scientifically valid. Well, I think any theory on fundamental concepts of physics must have philosophical
and practical implications. End of scientific exploration marks the beginning of the spiritual exploration but philosophy and religion must emerge from scientific analysis. Unfortunately, modern science has emerged from philosophical exploration of nature and that has done more damage than good to the science. Exploration of nature cannot be termed as scientific or philosophical, or spiritual; we explore nature, ask questions, and seek answers. This is the simple process that has to be followed by all explorers of nature. Philosophy does not even interpret information collected through scientific exploration; Physics analyzes the information by detaching the observer and yet it makes the mistake of treating perceived reality, which is an observer dependent phenomenon, on par with the reality; philosophy looks at the same information from the frame of reference of human beings. Everything that is in accordance with the laws of nature is a virtue; everything against it is a sin. Therefore, it is very important for us to understand the laws of nature. Metaphysical reality though is abstract phenomenon. By its very concept, metaphysical reality must stay out of the purview of scientific examination. Metaphysical reality finds its true expression in the idea of the God but it is safer to discuss metaphysical reality than to discuss existence of God. In the page on 'Nature of Reality', I have mentioned that even science examines the entities that can only be experienced through the effect they produce e.g. gravitation
force or even dark energy but these effects are quantifiable and can be proved through experiments. The metaphysical reality is supposed to be beyond any scientific examination; it does not have the idea of 'physical-ness' attached to it that every entity that science examines must have. My idea is not to explore the nature of metaphysical reality but is to show that human beings can take advantage of the laws of the nature to create the same effects that gives rise to the idea of metaphysical
reality. Whatever is, has to be an expression of the reality that has substance, that can be examined scientifically. Science cannot shy away from explaining any phenomenon even a phenomenon that is supposedly falls in the realms of 'mysticism'. Every phenomenon is a mystery till we explain it scientifically. As a scientist, I am duty bound to explain every observed phenomenon. However, I also must explain what is the significance of my study for a person who does not know even understands 'P' of physics. How does my scientific examination of nature of reality helps in the ascension of human beings? The later question pertaining to our ascension as human beings is what spirituality is all about. Spirituality is the exploration of the self and study of self is one way of studying the world around us. Who am I? What is my relation with everything else in the universe? Why am I here? These questions also lead to the scientific exploration and ultimately result in the ascension of the soul. Jesus, Buddha, Mohair, Paigmbar Mohammad Sahib, Lord Krishna, or Lord Ram did not study anything but the self; it was their study of the self that ensured their ascension to the level of the Godhood. It is the responsibility of the scientists to explain how an understanding of the laws of nature can help in our ascension. The ultimate objective of philosophies of all religions is to ensure the ascension of their followers - ascension to the state of enlightenment. Enlightenment. is about realization of our true identity. Enlightenment is not about knowing the answer to the question, 'Who am I?', it is about realizing who I am. There is a difference between knowing and realizing. Knowledge can be acquired through scientific analysis but knowledge in itself does not ensure enlightenment. Knowledge acquired through sense organs gives us relative information and therefore, even scientific exploration of the nature is not easy.
Job of philosophers is to explain the practical implications of the laws of nature. A scientist may say that particles behave in arbitrary manner; philosopher interprets the same information to conclude that particles have free will.
Human beings have only three resources - mind, body, and soul. The spiritual development of the soul is the ultimate objective of the philosophy and the religion. However, philosophy and religion cannot be allowed to have a free-ride; their principles must emerge from the laws of nature. Laws of nature can only be understood through the scientific exploration. Famous scientist Schrödinger suggests that total number of mind in the universe is one!!! Unfortunately, he does not explain the scientific reasoning behind this statement. My theory indisputably shows through scientific exploration that total number of not just the mind but the total number of physical entity in the universe is just one!!!
There is fundamental structure called space and there is fundamental process called time that goes on in this space. Space in itself is not the fundamental entity of the universe; fundamental entities of the universe constitute the fundamental structure or space. From a combination of the space and time emerge such a diverse universe as we have and from it emerges numerous other processes. Some of these processes are good for us and some of these processes are not good for us. Every observed phenomenon has to be explained through this basic structure and through this basic process. Every law of physics must relate to either the structural or functional aspects of the universe and if we can have such a such a theoretical structure then philosophy is bound to emerge from such physics. The next step is to develop a language that can be comprehended by even a non-physicists so that we can ensure that every human being lives a life in accordance with the laws of nature and to achieve that objective physics must take the form of a religion. We cannot expect that every person will understand even the simple language that such a religion may speak; we cannot expect that every person understands all the technicalities involved in the generation of TV signals, transmission of signals, the technology in a TV set or even of a remote device. We have to give the masses something that they can operate without bothering about the technicalities.
With the sole objective of ensuring that everyone follows the laws of nature, science must create metaphysical reality for the simple reason we cannot expect everyone to understand the laws of nature and yet we have to ensure that every one follows the laws of nature.
There is no need to create a new scientific religion; we already have too many religions. All we need to do is to find out the parallel scientific, philosophical, and religious principles and connect them with each other. Science, philosophy, and religion must come together to ensure that we live a life in accordance with the laws of nature.
It is the job of scientists to discover the laws of nature, philosophy must step in at this stage and explain the practical implications and device a language comprehensible to everyone. Obviously, the science and philosophy can encroach upon each other's territories. Religion follows to ensure that everyone follows the laws of the nature.
Metaphysical reality must have scientific basis. Metaphysics cannot be study of abstract, imaginary entity called metaphysical reality.
While this process goes on, a parallel process also is at work - to understand our real self and to understand why we are here. There are several other questions that emerge from our examination of nature that science ought to answer but these are the two most important questions that science must answer. This continuous exploration of our being and the reality and the purpose of our beingness results in different philosophical lines that throw different challenges for scientists. We have existentialism that started with the idea of self being the master but later accommodated the idea of the God and then there is phenomenology and phenomenological reality that must form the basis of scientific exploration. It was one such question from one of the readers of my book, 'Nature of Reality (Ist edition) that drew me into exploring philosophical aspects of reality. I was asked, "Dozens of theories of everything emerge everyday on the net, thousands of articles are published in the peer science journals every year, and even Noble prize for physics is awarded every year but I cannot think of even one theory that has made any difference to my life. What difference does your theory going to make in my life? How is it going to benefit me?
"If your theory is right then may be it will change the physics forever but will it change the life of even a single human being?"
I felt it was my responsibility to answer this question. My second book is an attempt to answer this question but here I will present some important philosophical implications of my theory but before that I must refer to another question that has been asked more than once, 'Is it possible to roll back the time?'
I had placed a very strict self-imposed restriction on myself while writing my first book; I had decided that I will not discuss anything that does not fall directly in the scope of scientific exploration but I realized that a discussion on the nature of reality cannot be complete without exploring and explaining the metaphysical and philosophical aspects of the reality. This book does not rely on or describes any extra-sensory powers, it is not about nonscientific issues. If any principle of science, philosophy, spiritualism, mysticism, or metaphysics is not based on the laws of nature then we need to get rid of it from our system, from our books, from our society.
When I say that this book was written through me rather than written by me, I am not indicating that some divine power whispered it in my ears and yet it is a fact that I was quite keen to avoid philosophy but somehow I was dragged into exploring philosophical implications of my theory and then the book sort of flowed through me almost effortlessly. I recall that when I purchased the Upanishads, the first thought that occurred in my mind was, 'If this book (There are 108 Upanishads, the book I purchased was a compilation of 18 most popular, if not most significant upanishads) can answer my question, 'Who am I?' then only it is worth reading it. I read rather than studied the upanishads and forgot about them for almost 10 years. Whenever I was faced with a difficult question, I turned to Upanishads and other philosophical and religious books (of almost all major religions) not as much to seek an answer but more to ensure that I am not leaving any possible line of thinking out of my examination, just to see if anything remains unanswered through my theory. It is quite possible that because the basic proposals of almost all religions were in the back of my mind as I had explored the religious and philosophical books during my scientific exploration, therefore, the second book sort of flowed through me. The first book forms the foundation of everything that I have discussed in this book but the second book is more accessible to even a non-physicist and it directly addresses the more important questions.
I recall watching a program on Discover Channel on the possibility of rolling back the time. A physicist associated probably with NASA (I am not sure) was making an excellent presentation on the basic plan and on the kind of time machine that may allow us to roll back the time.It seems the father of this physicist died when our friend was quite young and our friend wanted to roll back the time so that he can meet his loving father. I sincerely hope that my understanding of the nature is wrong and that our friend finds some way or the other to meet his father but I am afraid that it may not be possible.
Wrong understanding of nature can give false hope but more than that, it can make us adopt a life style that may be against the laws of the nature; fortunately, not many people are aware of our present set of theories and yet science has influenced our society enormously. Physics has made tremendous contribution in improving our general standard of living but benefits of science have reached only a handful of people. Physicists must look at philosophical implications of their own theories as this is the only way physics can reach masses.
Yes, it is possible to roll back the time for yourself but not in the manner that we would like it to roll back. Rolling back of time for us is like demotion in an organization or in a class. When everyone else has moved forward, we are left behind or in other words we go back to where we were a year or may several years back. I think I must explain the scientific basis of this statement through a simple analogy.
Let us imagine that universe is a dough made up of two fundamental particles - clay and water (for time being let us forget that clay nd water are not the irreducible element of physical description that Einstein proposes space is). If clay and water are distributed evenly at all coordinates of this dough and if absolute vacuum does not exist in the dough then the dough will be same at all points. Different forms can appear in this dough only if super symmetry of the dough is violated or in other words the distribution of clay and water gets uneven and hence variations in the density are created at different coordinates of the dough. This causes appearance of different forms in the dough. The region that has more clay and hence have higher density are perceived by us as matter.
This is the basic model of space that einstein presents (except that einstein does not propose that space consists of two fundamental particles) in general relativity. This dough with its super symmetry violated represents present state of the universe however, universe is gradually but constantly moving towards achieving super symmetry in its structure; this means that density variations in the different pockets of the dough are reducing constantly.
From here, we move away from the basic model of general relativity. The basic idea of time emerges from second law of thermodynamics which suggests that time moves only in the forward direction as the entropy of the universe is constantly increasing. Let us forget the technical complexities and conclude straight away that it is not possible to get back to a a sate where were a few years or even a moment ago.
In simple words, we can define time as a process through which universe is undergoing an irreversible change in its structure. We have already seen that universe is moving towards achieving super symmetry in its structure. What will be the state of the universe when it achieves super symmetry in its structure?
The temperature of the universe will be absolute zero (-271.15 degrees celsius) and there will not be any objects, no galaxies, no stars, no human beings, not even a dust particle or even a a photon. As per general relativity, all objects are mere space-time structures that emerge due to density variations in the universe. Since density of the universe will be same at all the coordinates of the universe therefore no forms or objects can appear in the universe.
At present, density of the universe is very high in some pockets like in black holes whereas in some other pockets like in voids the density is very low. Time runs faster in the regions where density variation is very high and it runs slower in the region where density of the universe is very low.
Any process or any activity that distorts space (increases the density of the space) makes the time run faster for that entity and any process or any action that reduces the distortion of space makes the time run slower for that entity. The relativity of space and relativity of time are intrinsically related to each other.
One of the analogies used to explain relativity of time is that when we are sitting with someone we like then time appears to run faster and when we are sitting with someone we dislike then time appears to run slower. I do not know how this explains relativity of time or even relativity; the reality is that time runs faster for us in both the cases even though our clocks may not record this change in the rate of flow of time for us. Therefore, it is good to be happy than to be sad but it is always better to be neither happy nor sad. Of course, this is the ideal state of mind that very few people can achieve but closer we can get to this state the better it is for us.
If you have read the home page then you may remember the mantra that says that only process that goes on in this universe is the absorption and emission of energy by all space-time structures. The greatest boon that god has granted us is that we can control the flow of energy in out of our system. However, we have turned this boon into a curse. We must transact energy in such a way that our space gets increasingly supersymmetrical.
The easiest way to slow down the rate of flow of time for us is to live for a cause. Unfortunately, to explain the scientific basis of this statement, I may have to explain numerous other phenomenon therefore I am skipping the scientific discussion. I have explained the scientific basis of this statement in my book, 'Nature of Reality'.
Whether your are a successful person or a person who is struggling to find something worthwhile to if for nothing else, purely for selfish reasons, associate yourself with a cause that does not ensure any material benefit to you but is good for others.
